Each group of states will give you several ways of memorizing: images, songs, movement, and a mnemonic device (memory trick). You can learn the states and capitals by heart simply by creating a structure in your brain called a schema (schemata = plural). The relationship between states will help you solidify this content in long-term memory. Let's be honest: it's not the fact that you can name all the states and capitals. It's more about having existing background knowledge and then attaching NEW ideas, images, experiences or history TO THAT EXISTING SCHEMA! Yay!
Here is a bit of backstory and an overview of how the method works. The states were orginally divided up by humans, and the lines sometimes seem meaningful, while other times they seem rather arbitrary. With my method, it does not matter because we will engage MORE of your brain in the process of learning. Multiple modalities means helping the information get into your long-term memory through overlapping of input sources. We will see vivid images, move our bodies in meaningful ways, and use rhyme and music to cement the states into long-term memory forever.
